BAC-EMS June 24, 2004Bayfield-Ashland Counties EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES June 24, 2004 The June meeting of the Bayfield-Ashland Counties EMS Council was called to order by Gary Victorson, Vice-President of the Council. The meeting was held in the Gull Island/Stockton Island Room of MMC/Ashland. Motion made by Teresa Gunderson, seconded by Del Jerome, to approve the minutes of the May meeting as written. Motion carried. NO TREASURER’S REPORT. COMMITTEE REPORTS MDAC (Medical Director Advisory Committee) – John Schulz, medical director, reported that MDAC discussed several issues: - New c-spine “release” protocol has been reviewed. It will be forwarded to all services by email and be posted on the website for additional review and approval by the Council. MDAC is hoping to be ready for one hour training before an upcoming Council meeting and be on line with the protocol within two months. - Pediatric Defibrillation discussion. MDAC is hoping that ambulance providers/services can be on line with pediatric capable AEDs before the general community, i.e. public access machines. - Continuing Education. MDAC discussed offering one hour of continuing education before Council meetings. Dr. Schulz is hoping to get ER docs and other local physicians to make presentations. He would like feedback from services as to what is needed. He will email request for subjects as well. Information sessions would be planned ahead with information going to each service. WEBSITE – The EMS Council website was set up last month – www.bac-ems.com. Dr. Schulz will keep updating it for awhile. Discussion of possible inclusions included service “biographical” information, pictures, EMT-Basic schedule, minutes for meetings, etc. AIRBAG TRAINING – Dave Long, alias the “Airbag Detective” did a three hour presentation on Airbag Safety and Driving “Hot”. Fifty-four people were in attendance from three counties. Seatbelt information may be a link from our website. RTAC BROCHURES – Brochures are available for services to distribute during public education activities. They can be picked up from MMC or Jan Victorson at the Bayfield County Annex in Washburn. WITC – Cindy Lazorik distributed the EMT-Basic schedule. A medical first responder course is planned for the Glidden area. EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT – Jan Victorson requested RTAC (Regional Trauma Advisory Council) – Merrilee Carlson reported that the RTAC is currently working on trauma triage guidelines. She stated that each service provider is required to submit trauma triage guidelines in order for relicensure this year. She also mentioned that a meeting was to be held in Lake Superior Regional Trauma Advisory Council also has a website – www.lsrtac.com. Merrilee is doing the maintenance on that site. HELICOPTER FIREHOUSE FIFTY – Teresa Gunderson requested assistance from the EMS Council to provide MASON DAYS – Teresa also announced that Mason Fire and Ambulance are staging a car crash/drill with a couple of cars, patients and landing of a medical helicopter just after the parade at Mason Days, June 27th. PNB SCENE – Discussion as to whether or not EMTs need to remain at the scene of a pulseless non-breathing patient when waiting for the coroner. Dr. Schulz will develop a formal memo to all services encouraging EMTs to be released from the scene as soon as possible. There is a potential negative impact on a community to have EMTs tied up longer than needed when there is no patient to treat. NEXT MEETING – The next meeting of the Council will be held at MMC/Ashland on Thursday, July 22nd. Motion made by Teresa Gunderson, seconded by Leslie Lee to adjourn the meeting. Motion carried. Meeting adjourned.
