Bayfield-Ashland Counties EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES April 26, 2012

The EMS Council meeting was called to order by Dean Hambrecht, President of the Council.

A motion was made by Gary Victorson, seconded by Tam Hofman, to approve the minutes as distributed. Motion carried.

MEDICAL DIRECTOR - Gary Victorson reported that the basic medical director John Shultz will be presenting information in Iron River early in May. Information will be distributed to area directors when the date is finalized.

RTAC - Jan Victorson reported that the Lake Superior Regional Trauma Advisory Council (RTAC) is looking at providing ongoing trauma education next year. The training may include PHTLS (Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support), ATT (Advanced Treatment of Trauma), Pediatric sim-baby, and Trauma Basics. WITC - Cindy Lazorik reported that this is the last official night of the EMT Basic course. The National Registry exam is scheduled for May 12th. The fall EMT Basic course will be 144 hours; it will be 180 hours in 2013.

MMC - Merrilee Carlson reported that there is some new staff in the emergency room. The doctors remain the same. AFD Nate Reisdorf is developing one form for transfer of patients (PCS/Patient Certification Statement). The garage expansion project and the sink in the garage being available for use were discussed.

EMT RECRUITMENT PROJECT - Marcy Pratt reviewed the project:

  • Ashland Home Show - the booth at the Ashland Home Show went very well. There was participation from Glidden, Iron River, Mason, Mellen, South Shore and Washburn ambulance services. Seventeen people signed up for more information.
  • May 5th Recruitment Event scheduled at the Great Lakes Visitors Center from 10 AM until 3 PM. There will be vendors present. Event committee will meet to finalize planning. Ambulances and crew will be on site from Iron River, Mason and Washburn. Life Link III will be on site unless called out. Demonstrations will be scheduled. Heartland live radio broadcast from 10 AM until noon. Food by Friends of NGLVC.
  • Brochures were distributed.
  • Video is completed and will be running in the theatre at NGLVC. It also may be accessed through www.bac-ems.com website or www.nwcep.org .
  • Screening test will be administered to those who sign up.
  • Benchmark test to be taken by existing EMTs (60 to 90 minutes).
  • Training dollars of $2000 discussed; consensus that using dollars for marketing may be more valuable.

LIFE LINK III - Events planned in the area include:

  • May 5th - EMT Recruiting event, NGLVC
  • May 18th - Be SOMEBODY media event, Brule
  • June 27th - Blue Mass, Washburn

EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT - Jan handed out reminders the SKYWARN weather spotter training in Iron River, Monday, April 30th. Thank you to all who attended the WISCOM Train the trainer class.

CONCEALED CARRY - Dan Clark reported that the Ashland Fire Department has a good policy. The committee - Dan Clark, Gary Victorson, Jan Victorson - will continue to develop for use by the Council.

SOUTH SHORE - Pete Schenck has resigned as director of South Shore Ambulance. The new director will be elected/appointed early in May.

BARNES - Tom Renz announced that Barnes Fire is looking to host a SAR (Search and Rescue) certification class in the future.

PROJECT LIFESAVER - Bayfield County Sheriff's Office has received a grant for training and equipment for use in tracking of wanderers. The average time to find folks nationwide is 30 minutes. (The individual wears a bracelet that transmits a unique radio signal that can be tracked using BASO equipment.)

NEXT MEETING - The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday, May 24th - 7:00 PM.

Motion made by Gary Victorson, seconded by Cindy Lazorik, to adjourn the meeting. Meeting adjourned.
