05 Burns

1.     Remove victim from heat source.   DO NOT ENDANGER YOURSELF.
                    
(Notify Power Company, Gas Company, Hazmat as necessary)


 
2.     Secure and maintain airway.  Consider C-spine precautions.
         Administer O2 to maintain SaO2 > 95% (90% if hx COPD)

 

3.     Stop burning process:
         
·         Remove clothing that is not adhered
         
·         Remove rings, bracelets, constricting items
         
·         Brush powdered chemicals from skin / flush
         
·         If molten material, cool with water

 
4.     Complete Primary Survey.  Initiate BCLS as needed.

 

5.     CONSIDER INHALATION INJURY SIGNS:
         
·         Blackened sputum
         
·         Facial burns, singed facial or nasal hair
         
·         Hoarseness or new cough
         
·         Increasing restlessness
         
·         Rapid shallow respirations
         
·         Inspect oropharynx/vocal cords for redness, blisters, 
               carbon particles – will need early intubation before complete occlusion

 
6.     Determine extent and severity of burn

MAJOR BURN 
          (Adult >20% Body Surface Area)             MINOR BURN  (Adult <20% BSA)

          (Peds >10% BSA)                                                                 (Peds <10% BSA)

 

1.     CALL FOR INTERCEPT                                1.     Obtain Secondary Survey,

                                                                                        AVOID HYPOTHERMIA.
